Learning Something New....
Students need to learn something new every time they are with us. When was the last time you learned something new....something really challenging?
Listen to Jay McTighe's video (half of the UBD team). It made me think of my own learning. Jay gives great advice about remaining resilient as a learner...something we can help kids with by modeling it.
For Jay is was surfing and for me it is learning to play the piano. One of Jay's criteria for staying resilient is making use of feedback to improve. As teachers we should be giving feedback to students on how to get better. For my playing of the piano I only have my own ear and my lesson books for feedback. No, I am not taking lessons, at least not yet, but I do practice everyday and truly enjoy using what I believe is a different part of my brain.

Don't get me wrong....I love date....but I am starting to attend meetings about students learning needs that focus only the numbers and not the person. Raising a number doesn't always equate to learning especially when it comes to fluency or some other measure that is meant to indicate a certain skill level....it is not THE skill.

I've been known to say the computer is only a tool as good as the brain of the person using it. Much more than a tool though according to this article....I need to expand my definition.

Wow is all I can say after reading the full article. I'm definitely a western parent but compared to my wife I am more eastern....but after reading this I realize I can move further east.

I've thought about this myself. Parenting style has so much to do with achievement and I can't help but think Western parents (myself, included) are a bit permissive with respect to work habits, achievement and grades at school.
